WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Marty Meehan (D-MA), chair of the House Armed Services Sub-Committee on Oversight and Investigations, today will re-introduce legislation to repeal the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” ban on lesbian, gay, and bisexual military personnel. California Military Reserve Commander Releases Strong Endorsement of Equal Opportunity

SACRAMENTO, CALIF. – Major General William H. Wade II, commander of the California Military Reserve, has issued a policy memorandum on the state’s commitment to non-discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. The memo, dated February 14, notes that “All leaders are responsible for ensuring that every member of the State Civil Service, State Military Reserve, and State Active Duty who are not federally recognized receive fair and equitable treatment on the basis of their capability and merit without regard to race, color, religion, nationality, gender, disability, age, or sexual orientation.” The non-discrimination order, signed in September 2004 by California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, applies to all California state military personnel who are ineligible for activation or deployment by the federal government. New York Congressman Asks State Department to Consider Hiring Military Linguists Dismissed

WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Gary Ackerman (D-NY) today urged Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to consider hiring military linguists discharged under the federal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” ban on lesbian, gay and bisexual service members. During hearings on the 2008 State Department budget, Ackerman pressed Secretary Rice to address the government’s foreign language deficit by employing discharged lesbian and gay linguists with training in Arabic and Farsi.
